Wernigerode Castle rises majestically above the roofs of the old town and offers a breathtaking panoramic view – over the town, the Harz foothills and as far as the Brocken. Down in the heart of the town, the magnificent town hall with its half-timbered façade overlooks the picturesque market square.
A stroll through the historic old town takes you past some real originals: the ‘Smallest House’, the ‘Leaning House’ and the artistically decorated ‘Krummel House’. A stroll through the pleasure garden and the public park is also well worth it. Particularly charming is the adjacent miniature park ‘Kleiner Harz’, which delights visitors with lovingly designed models and unusual exhibits.
After a stroll through the romantic alleys, the next adventure beckons: the Harz narrow-gauge railway takes you up to the Brocken – right into the heart of the Harz National Park. At its foot lies Schierke, a district of Wernigerode and a popular climatic health resort that delights nature lovers and sports enthusiasts alike.
Nature, culture and people – there is hardly any other place where these three elements can be combined as harmoniously as in Wernigerode, the ‘colourful town in the Harz Mountains’.
